The Decline of Work Ethic in the Workplace

Image
Work ethic is defined by how hard a person decided to work to accomplish the goals for both the company, and the employee themselves. Unfortunately, the work ethic in today's world has begun to decline. As new employees enter the workforce, and overwhelming sense of entitlement comes with them. People are wanting to move quickly through a company and get to their end goal as fast as they can, but they are also showing an unwillingness to sit and take the lumps that come with reaching their goals.        I know right now, I am in the process of taking my lumps. I am currently working full time and attempting to go to school as well to better myself for the future. A lot of people though are not willing to take lower paying positions and simply get into a company. People with high work ethics know that getting a foot in the door with a company is the start of their careers. Hard work pays off in the end, and opportunities need time to blossom int...

The Decline of Morale in the Workplace

Image
The decline of morale in the workplace is the top hindrance to engagement among employees. People today are looking at their jobs and trying to decide if what they are doing is actually meaning something to them. When employees decide that what they are doing is not what they want to be doing, it leads to lack of effort in their work, and less pride for their job.        Someone who has lost their way within a company is usually hard to bring back, but it is possible. The problem with one person losing their morale is that it begins to spread throughout a company. When that person is tasked to work with someone or on a team, the other members begin to feel as though they are picking up the slack for the employee who just doesn't seem to care anymore. After a while of putting in extra effort, it starts to have an adverse effect of those who do have higher morale. Once a company begins to lose their experienced workers, the need to hire new em...

Causes for Decline of Work Ethic and Morale

Image
Workplace ethics and morale have seemed to be on the decline for years. People entering the workforce have an idea on what they feel like is going to be expected of them and how everything works. Unfortunately, the only way someone gains the information they need to work, is to put in the time and take some of the lumps that come with the job. \      Most of the decline in work ethic comes from the fact that employees assigned unwanted tasks merely get upset over the fact and choose to do a sub-par job on that task. Instead of speaking to a manager or superior about why they are disgruntled, they merely just let it affect their work. When a manager feels as though they are losing the employee, the need to micromanage them becomes more necessary, and overall negative representation of the employee is created. All these lead to employees fearing for their jobs, and excessive workloads placed on employees who show a good work ethic and can get tasks ...

Ways to Improve Work Ethic and Morale

Image
Improving work ethic and morale within a company is a relatively simple task and doesn't even need to revolve around money. In most cases, employees just want to feel as though they are being seen and heard by the company.       A few suggestions would include a suggestion form for employees to use when they are felling disgruntled about something.  Opening and just listening to the ideas from your employees could create quick and easy solutions to problems that could have grown over time. Another way to increase ethic and morale is to simply recognize the employee. This could be for something such as staying late and going above and beyond, to celebrating a milestone within the company. People who tend to stay around for a long time often feel joy when they are given the recognition for being a loyal employee. Sometimes creating a culture within your company that promotes teamwork and bonding can also increase morale and ethic. Team bui...

In today's world, people are looking for instant gratification and large portion have begun to show that they just simply aren't engaged while they are at work. Working for QuikTrip, I feel as though I have begun to see this more than ever. Employees are seeking to find the easiest and fastest ways to complete a task, and frequently that task gets done to sub-par standards.      A declining work ethic within a younger generation has generated a lot of the problems. I notice newer employees coming in and instantly becoming upset when they are asked to do a task that they feel like they don't want to do or don't feel as though they should have to do. Realizing what your job positions entails is key to understanding what a company is going to expect from you. A simple example of this is cleaning restrooms, and QuikTrip has developed a very good reputation for having clean restrooms. Employees are trained on how to clean and how often to clean restro...
