The Decline of Morale in the Workplace
The decline of morale in the workplace is
the top hindrance to engagement among employees. People today are looking at
their jobs and trying to decide if what they are doing is actually meaning
something to them. When employees decide that what they are doing is not what
they want to be doing, it leads to lack of effort in their work, and less pride
for their job.
Someone who has lost their way within a company is usually hard
to bring back, but it is possible. The problem with one person losing their
morale is that it begins to spread throughout a company. When that person is
tasked to work with someone or on a team, the other members begin to feel as
though they are picking up the slack for the employee who just doesn't seem to
care anymore. After a while of putting in extra effort, it starts to have an
adverse effect of those who do have higher morale. Once a company begins to
lose their experienced workers, the need to hire new employees becomes
necessary.
New employees can turn out to be a good thing in the long run if
they stay, but if you enter them into the same vicious cycle, things can go south quickly. A simple decline in morale could lead to big changes, and
turnover can begin to grow exponentially if not corrected quickly. Besides
changes within the company, customers can usually sense when a company has low
morale, and that can often lead to customers choosing a different company for
their business. Business News Daily presented an article that shows how poor workplace morale has effected companies and gives a more analytical view of it. The article can be read at, The Reason Employee Morale is on the Decline.
The above graph shows that the number one reason for low engagement is work is poor morale. If a company or manager can keep their employees happy and engaged, the process of work becomes easier and more efficient. Employees with high morale and good work ethic perform at the highest standards and tend to stick around for a longer duration.
